Overview: The 20th Century and the Emergence of Indonesia
The history of 20th Century Indonesia from 1900 to 1998 was a time of often traumatic and rapid change driven by both internal and external factors. The century stirred into life with the beginnings of Indonesian nationalism which would eventually lead to independence. The Second World War ripped the last vestiges of European imperialism apart, and saw the creation of a short-lived Japanese empire. We will study the beginnings of the idea of Indonesia, and the traumatic impact of the Japanese occupation. Then the post war Indonesian Revolution saw the emergence of the Indonesian Republic amid an incredible diversity of experience as well as social and political tensions reflecting the incredibly diverse and pluralistic nature of Indonesia. Last but not least, we will examine and begin to explain how, why and when different interpretations of 20th Century Indonesian history have arisen.
